Boost in health services
The new Peel Memorial will include a multi-storey patient tower with 250 inpatient beds for patients requiring longer hospital stays and space to build more in the future, as well as new and enhanced outpatient services and day programs to residents in Brampton and the surrounding region.
The current Urgent Care Centre that is operating 24 hours a day/seven days a week will transition to Brampton's second Emergency Department when the new hospital opens.
Meeting the needs of the community
The new hospital addresses the significant need for more specialized care for patients requiring longer hospital stays before they can safely return home or to care in the community. It will also help create more space for very sick patients at Brampton Civic Hospital.

Frequently asked questions
The new Peel Memorial |
What is the new Peel Memorial? The new Peel Memorial Hospital redevelopment project represents an exciting step forward for Osler, Brampton and the surrounding community, and will increase health care capacity in our community for years to come. The transformation of Peel Memorial into Brampton’s new hospital will include a multi-storey patient tower, with inpatient beds for patients recovering from an acute care stay requiring specialized care before they can safely return home. When combined with the new Emergency Department, outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging, surgery and other health services already operating on site, the new Hospital will bring a significant boost in services for patients in our community. When will shovels be in the ground and when will the new Peel Memorial open its doors?Hospitals are among the most complex projects to design and build. Many stages of government planning and approvals are necessary to build a new hospital. Osler continues to proceed through the required capital development process with the Ministry of Health and Infrastructure Ontario (IO). In October/November 2024, Osler and IO, in partnership with the Ontario government, marked a significant milestone by releasing the Request for Proposals (RFP) to build the new Peel Memorial Hospital. Following a competitive Request for Qualifications (RFQ), four top-tier teams have now been shortlisted to submit proposals detailing how they would deliver the project through IO’s Progressive Design-Build contract model. Proposals will be evaluated by IO and Osler, and the top-ranked team will then work collaboratively with IO and Osler during a Development Phase. Following the Development Phase, Osler may sign a construction contract with the successful team to deliver the project and start full construction on the new hospital tower. Pre-construction work remains underway at Peel Memorial and, in early 2024, the City of Brampton approved a zoning by-law amendment application that enables hospital construction of this magnitude. Early construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2025, and the final design and construction timeline will be established in partnership with the successful proponent. As with any large-scale construction projects, key dates are subject to change, pending additional approvals. |
Local share |
Why is Osler asking the City of Brampton to help pay for the new Peel Memorial? The Ontario Government funds 90 per cent of hospital construction costs. Communities are responsible for the remaining 10 per cent, as well as 100 per cent of equipment, information technology, furniture and many other essentials. This is called the “local share”. About 70 per cent of hospital redevelopment projects in Ontario involve some form of municipal funding towards the local share, and many larger municipalities use designated levies to fund a contribution. In 2022, Brampton City Council approved a hospital levy towards the local share. Community support is critical to ensure hospitals can continue to meet current and future health care needs. Osler continues to work with the City of Brampton, William Osler Health System Foundation, and the community towards reaching local share requirements. |
Future hospital expansion |
What is Osler doing to advocate for a third hospital? As our community continues to grow, it’s essential that health care services grow too, and support from government partners remains essential for our community’s long-term health care capacity and infrastructure. As a leading hospital system in Ontario, Osler continues discussions with the Ontario Government and the City of Brampton on other hospital capacity priorities, including a third hospital in Brampton. In addition to transforming Peel Memorial and expanding cancer care services for our region, Osler is planning for the future redevelopment of Etobicoke General Hospital, establishing a research institute, and is partnering with Toronto Metropolitan University to open a new School of Medicine in Brampton. |
