William Osler Health System (Osler) has partnered with Intellijoint Surgical to bring Intellijoint HIP™ – an innovative made-in-Ontario technology used in total hip replacement surgery – to its community. For patients requiring hip replacement surgery, this means fewer complications and improved outcomes.
Intellijoint HIP™ is a surgeon-controlled, computer-assisted navigation system that provides surgeons with real-time, quantitative measurements for accurate, easy and fast alignment and positioning. Using the technology to improve accuracy is clinically proven to help reduce leg length discrepancies, hip dislocations, and revision surgeries post-operatively. It also improves the hospital’s efficiency by eliminating the need to use intra-operative x-ray to determine the ideal placement of the implant, ultimately reducing the time per surgery and optimizing hospital resources.
“Through the partnership with Intellijoint Surgical, we are able to bring state-of-the-art technology to our surgery patients, while also increasing efficiency within the hospital system.” said Jane de Lacy, Vice President, Clinical Services, William Osler Health System. “By leveraging the latest advancements in technology and innovation, Osler continues to deliver on its Mission to bring innovative health care delivered with compassion to our communities.”
“We are thrilled to introduce Intellijoint HIP™ into our surgery practice for total hip arthroplasty,” said Dr. Roberta Minna, Chief of Surgery and Co-Medical Director, Surgical Services at William Osler Health System. “By harnessing the power of technology alongside the skill of the Osler team, Intellijoint HIP empowers our surgeons to be as accurate and efficient as possible, leading to better patient and hospital outcomes.”
Comprised of a single instrument tray, miniature camera and software encoded on a laptop, Intellijoint HIP™ is a cost-effective and user-friendly technology to improve total hip surgery. It integrates seamlessly into a surgeon’s preferred surgical workflow, can be used with any major implant, and does not add time for room turnover or the sterilization process.
“As a local Ontario business, we are proud to be able to work with local hospital systems like Osler that view innovation as a key enabler of better patient and hospital outcomes,” said Armen Bakirtzian, CEO of Intellijoint Surgical. “Especially as the province is looking for solutions to reduce surgical backlogs, partnerships like this are required to provide surgeons, care teams, and hospitals with technology to generate efficiencies and optimal results for patients, without adding significant costs.”
Partnerships with innovative technology companies like Intellijoint Surgical cultivate a dynamic environment of continuous improvement within hospitals. By supporting the integration of cutting-edge technologies and best practices, these collaborations drive hospitals, like Osler, to remain at the forefront of health care innovation and patient experience.
The Honourable Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation and MPP, Brampton South, agrees. "Partnerships between organizations like William Osler Health System and Intellijoint Surgical will have a life-changing impact for patients right here in Brampton as this marks a pivotal moment in advancing Ontario’s healthcare with this state-of-the-art hip replacement technology.”
