To date, our Clinical Ethics Internship Program has successfully mentored more than 20 interns, students and fellows from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds. Graduates of this program have gone on to become leaders in the field of bioethics throughout North America.
Program participants learn about:
- Osler's Ethics Quality Improvement (EQI) Lab, an innovative approach to addressing common ethics-related errors in health care
- our EQI approach, which uses quality improvement and adaptive leadership methods to improve the quality of patient care, at Osler and beyond

Program overview |
The Clinical Ethics Internship Program provides interns with opportunities to learn about EQI, support EQI projects and observe clinical ethics activities in the lab. In general, the program aims to:
Lab activities generally include meetings, rounds, education events, policy development and consultations. Interns may also contribute to research, analysis and ethics tool development. In the clinical setting, interns are supervised by an ethicist. Each intern will work with Osler's Ethics team and develop personalized learning goals and strategies for the duration of their tenure. Clinical ethics interns are primarily located at Brampton Civic and also support activities at Etobicoke General and Peel Memorial. Please note that this program is currently unpaid. Where funding becomes available, interns will be supported accordingly. |
Eligibility criteria |
The Clinical Ethics Internship Program invites applicants with an extensive theoretical background in ethics or quality improvement, including those with an undergraduate, postgraduate or professional degree. Two part-time positions are available each year. |
Start dates |
This program commences on September 5 and concludes March 31. In addition, some interns may be invited to complete a summer internship from April 1 to August 15. |

Information for practicum student applications

The EQI Lab offers a Practicum Program for students enrolled in health care ethics (or equivalent) graduate program, seeking opportunities to observe and support ethics quality improvement and clinical/organizational ethics activities. The EQI Lab, opened in 2017 as a permanent, focused space for the on-going innovation, collaboration, and patient-inspired ethics activities taking place at Osler and beyond. The EQI Lab works towards improving the quality of care for all patients at Osler and beyond. We do this through education, consultation, policy development, research, and various Ethics Quality Improvement projects that address common, systemic ethical challenges. The Lab seeks to be a change leader for better care. EQI is an innovative approach to addressing common or recurring ethical errors. EQI is a systematic and formal approach that utilizes quality improvement tools, and principles of change management and adaptive leadership. The EQI Lab has designed and launched Accreditation Canada Leading Practices and award-winning Ethics Quality Improvement Projects that stem from the goal of ensuring our work makes a difference to patients, and the belief that we can always improve the work we do. Each project seeks to contribute to exceptional quality of care to patients through the health continuum. Practicum students will work towards the completion of their proposed project, while supervised by an Osler Ethicist. Please note that this program is currently unpaid. |
