Long-time Osler physician and leader appointed to lead one of Canada’s largest community hospitals
Today, Jane McMullan, Chair of the William Osler Health System (Osler) Board of Directors announced that long-time Osler physician and leader, Dr. Naveed Mohammad, has been named as the organization’s President and Chief Executive Officer. The announcement comes as a result of a comprehensive search spanning the last five months.
Dr. Mohammad has been with Osler since 1997, beginning as an emergency physician at Etobicoke General Hospital. He has held a number of progressively senior leadership roles since that time, including that of Osler’s Chief of Emergency Services in 2006 and Osler’s first Vice-President, Medical Affairs in 2012.
Most recently, Dr. Mohammad has been Osler’s Executive Vice-President, Quality, Medical and Academic Affairs where he has helped strengthen quality of care and patient experience across the hospital’s three sites.
“We’re thrilled Dr. Mohammad will be leading this organization and bringing his extensive experience as a leader and physician to the role of President and CEO,” said Jane McMullan. “Many opportunities lie ahead as the organization continues to build and enhance partnerships locally and provincially to better meet the needs of the community. Dr. Mohammad’s passion for high quality, patient-centred care and his strong leadership perfectly position him to take on this important work and lead the organization confidently into the future.”
Also a respected leader outside of Osler’s walls, Dr. Mohammad has held key leadership roles provincially, including as Lead of Emergency Medicine for the Central West Local Health Integration Network, as a member of the Ontario Hospital Association’s (OHA) Physician Provincial Leadership Council, and as a physician Accreditor with Accreditation Canada – a role he has held for the past seven years.
Dr. Mohammad holds a Bachelor in Biochemistry and Microbiology from the University of Toronto, received his medical degree from the University of Ottawa, and completed his residency in family medicine and emergency certification at the University of Toronto. He is also slated to complete a Global Executive Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in Health Care and Life Sciences from the Rotman School of Management at University of Toronto in April 2020.
“I’m honoured to have the opportunity to lead the organization and support our skilled and compassionate team of staff, physicians, and volunteers as we continue to go beyond to deliver on Osler’s Vision of patient-inspired health care without boundaries,” said Dr. Naveed Mohammad. “I’m deeply committed to advancing Osler’s culture of patient safety and quality, and look forward to working across the organization, and with partners across the region, to elevate the patient experience for the community we serve.”
Dr. Frank Martino, interim President and CEO, will continue to lead the organization until Dr. Mohammad assumes the role on April 14, 2020.
“We were fortunate to have a strong, committed leader step in to the important role of interim President and CEO during the search process,” continued McMullan. “We thank Dr. Martino for the invaluable guidance, support and stability he has provided over the last few months.”
