William Osler Health System (Osler) is proud to announce it has been awarded the prestigious Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) designation by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), demonstrating Osler’s unwavering commitment to providing its patients with the highest standards of care.
“We are honoured to receive the Best Practice Spotlight Organization designation from the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario,” said Dr. Frank Martino, President and CEO, William Osler Health System. “As an organization committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality, people-centred care, Osler's journey to achieve the BPSO designation demonstrates our steadfast dedication to continuous improvement and to providing the best care to patients in the communities we serve.”
The recognition is the result of a three-year journey during which teams across Osler collaborated to implement and strengthen international guidelines that are used to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients on a daily basis – also known as evidence-based best practice guidelines (BPGs). Since 2021, Osler team members have executed BPSO BPG recommendations for person-and-family-centred care, for preventing falls and reducing injury from falls, for the assessment and management of pressure injuries for the interprofessional team, as well as for the assessment and management of foot ulcers for people with diabetes.
Implementing BPG recommendations has led to many patient experience, quality and safety improvements at Osler, including increased patient and family member involvement in personalized care plans, reducing falls and hospital length of stay, reducing pressure injuries and risk of serious infection, and early assessment and referrals for patients with diabetes to prevent foot ulcers.
“This achievement was made possible thanks to the collaboration of hundreds of Osler team members working together, and I am immensely grateful for their determination and dedication to high-quality care and patient safety,” said Tiziana Rivera, Executive Vice President, Quality, Research, and Chief Nursing Executive. “Receiving the BPSO designation is an outstanding recognition for Osler’s teams and truly represents our values of excellence and collaboration, as well as our commitment to providing the highest standards of care. Having achieved this over the last three years is even more of a testament to Osler’s pledge to going beyond for our communities.”
Going forward, Osler will monitor the progress of its BPSO BPGs and, in partnership with the RNAO, implement additional BPGs, such as transitions in care and services, working with families to promote safe sleep for infants 0-12 months of age and promoting 2SLGBTQI+ healthy equity. This work will help Osler continue to achieve the best possible patient outcomes and enable its team members to further enrich their clinical practice and skills.
