Brampton Civic Hospital surgical team performs 1,000th ROSA® assisted knee replacement
On March 3, 2025, William Osler Health System (Osler) reached a significant milestone in surgical innovation, performing the 1,000th robot assisted total knee replacement using the ROSA® Knee System at Brampton Civic Hospital.
The ROSA® Knee System, developed by Zimmer Biomet, helps surgeons personalize total knee replacement surgery for their patients. The ROSA® Knee System includes features to assist with bone resections and assessing the state of soft tissues. Data provided by ROSA® Knee assists with complex decision-making and enables surgeons to use computer and software technology to control and move surgical instruments, allowing for greater precision and flexibility during procedures. This advanced approach leads to smaller incisions, reduced hospital stays, and faster recovery times for patients.
“Every patient is unique,” said Dr. Roberta Minna, Chief of Surgery and Co-Medical Director, Surgical Services at William Osler Health System. “With ROSA, the surgeon inputs the patient’s specific information into the system, creating a personalized solution for each patient. By integrating robotic assistance into our knee replacement program, we’re able to offer our patients the latest advancements in orthopedic care, improving outcomes and enhancing recovery.”
In 2024, ROSA-assisted procedures accounted for 38 per cent of all knee replacement surgeries completed at Osler during the calendar year. The median age of patients receiving knee replacement surgery was 69 years of age, with 66 per cent of them being female.
“Zimmer Biomet is delighted to congratulate the entire Osler team on their 1,000th ROSA Knee case!”, said Luke Windisch, Vice President and General Manager, Zimmer Biomet, Canada Inc. “Zimmer Biomet is committed to innovation in orthopaedics; however, its only through partnership with clinical teams who are willing to challenge the status quo by embracing change and themselves committing to new ways of delivering care, that innovation delivers on its potential.”
Collaborations with innovative health care technology companies – such as Zimmer Biomet – foster an environment of continuous improvement and surgical advancement. Osler continues to integrate cutting-edge technology to expand surgical capabilities and improve patient experiences.
“Osler’s partnership with Zimmer Biomet highlights our commitment to enhancing access to state-of-the-art technology for patients, and increasing efficiency within the hospital system.” said Fred Go, Vice President, Clinical Services, William Osler Health System. “By leveraging advancements like the ROSA Knee System, Osler continues to deliver on our Mission to bring innovative, compassionate care to our communities.”
