Dr. Priya Chopra, MD, FRCSC, is a general surgeon at William Osler Health System’s (Osler) Brampton Civic Hospital. Upon completing her Medical Degree at Western University, Dr. Chopra completed her general surgery residency at the University of Ottawa, along with paediatric surgical training at the University of Montreal.
Canadian cancer statistics1 show that one in eight Canadian women will be diagnosed or develop breast cancer in their lifetime, as well as almost 300 men each year.2 Here are Dr. Chopra’s five tips for breast cancer awareness and prevention:
Screen for breast cancer regularly
Follow your doctor and the Canadian Cancer Society’s recommendations for regular breast cancer screening. Learn more about breast cancer screening guidelines.
Limit your alcohol consumption, and quit smoking or vaping
Drinking any amount of alcohol, as well as smoking or vaping, can increase your risk of developing breast and other cancers. If you do choose to drink alcohol, you can reduce your risk of developing cancer by having no more than two standard alcoholic drinks per week.3
Breastfeed as long as possible
Research has shown that breastfeeding can help protect against breast cancer. If you are able to do so, the longer you breastfeed, the greater the risk reduction.4
Increase plant-based protein in your diet
Choosing a healthy diet that is high in plant-based protein and fibre and low in red meat protein, especially in childhood, may reduce risk of future breast cancer.5
Exercise often
Moderate to vigorous exercise 150 minutes per week can help reduce your risk of breast cancer and provide many other health benefits. If regular exercise is new to you, check with your doctor, start slowly and build up over time.
