The Emergency Department is the frontline of health care, where nurses provide essential, life-saving care to patients in their most critical moments. For over 15 years, Emergency Registered Nurse, Lyda Gabrang-Jorge has exemplified this vital role, finding not only professional fulfillment but also a sense of family within the collaborative and compassionate environment she has helped cultivate at Osler.
A career rooted in compassion
Lyda’s journey in health care began long before joining Osler—she has dedicated over thirty-one years to nursing. Her passion for nursing was sparked by personal experience, including caring for her terminally ill grandmother. Their deep emotional connection drove her into the health care field, where empathy and patient advocacy were her guiding principles. “I felt my compassion and empathy thriving,” she explained. “Health care is where I felt I could give back.” Lyda’s unwavering compassion led her to Osler, where she has nurtured her skills and continues to touch countless lives. One of the most memorable experiences in her career involved providing comfort to a terminally ill patient - Lyda’s advocacy and support with pain management brought comfort to the patient and earned her the heartfelt gratitude of the patient’s family. “The family told me I deserved a gold medal,” she recalled. “That moment reaffirmed why I became a nurse—to provide compassion and empathy when it’s needed most.”
Teamwork, collaboration and diversity: the heart of Osler
Lyda knows how essential teamwork is when facing the unexpected challenges of emergency care. “In the Emergency Department, you never know what’s coming through the door, so you rely on your team to get through together.” This collaboration, for Lyda is the foundation of delivering optimal patient care. She described her colleagues as her second family—people she can count on during even the most stressful shifts. “You must support each other and know you’re not working alone. You build trust with your team, and that trust is crucial in providing the best care.” This family-like dynamic is built on strong communication and collaboration, not only among nurses but across all departments, including doctors and allied health professionals. Lyda also emphasizes how Osler’s diverse and inclusive environment enhances both teamwork and patient care. Working alongside colleagues from varied backgrounds and perspectives, Lyda has learned that diversity strengthens collaboration and enriches the care provided to patients. “You have to understand that everyone brings something unique to the table. Diversity isn’t just about acknowledging differences—it’s about using them to work better together.”
Endless growth opportunities
Lyda credits her thriving career to the continuous professional growth opportunities available at Osler. “Whether it’s through training in specialized areas like resuscitation or having access to clinical nurse educators and education days, there’s always something new to learn.” She also praised Osler’s management team for playing a key role in fostering this growth, offering mentorship, support, and recognition for achievements. She values the access to online educational resources, support for attending conferences, and the many other avenues for professional development. What Lyda cherishes most is how Osler’s leadership celebrates milestones and recognizes staff contributions, reinforcing a positive work culture. “You feel like a vital part of the team, and that sense of being valued makes all the difference.” As a mentor herself, guiding new nurses through the complexities of emergency care, Lyda highlights the importance of this supportive environment in helping staff feel less overwhelmed. “Starting in a new setting can be daunting, but Osler ensures you’re never alone. There’s always someone there to support you.” For Lyda, Osler truly sets itself apart by providing a wide range of learning opportunities and consistent support. “Educators are an integral part of our team, they help shape and develop our new hires through educational sessions and the weekly Emergency Dispatch bulletin–their guidance and mentorship supports our nurses and prepares the next generation of amazing nurses.”
Careers that go beyond
In her 16 years with Osler, Lyda has experienced many opportunities for personal and professional growth. “Osler gave me the chance to grow in every way,” she said. “The support system was incredible—whether it came from management or colleagues, I was never alone.”
