Aneta is a Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) in the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Department at Etobicoke General Hospital. Using the latest methods and technologies, Aneta and her team provide fast, accurate diagnoses so patients can begin their treatment as quickly as possible.
She has worked as an MRT at Osler for 11 years, supporting various areas of the DI Department including general radiography, CT and MRI. For the last nine years Aneta has also held the role of Clinical Education Leader, guiding and engaging with students through their clinical placements at Osler.
Discovering a passion for imaging
For Aneta, working in an education role feels like coming full circle – it was a student event that led Aneta to her career as an MRT. “I remember going through several different programs at a university career fair, and there was one that stood out to me the most – diagnostic imaging. I was fascinated by the images that the technology was able to obtain. From that point on, I wanted to learn more about human anatomy and pathology. I was also drawn to the idea of helping patients, and doing my best to leave a positive impact with each patient I came into contact with. Years later, when I was an MRT student, I actually completed my clinical placement at Brampton Civic Hospital. It was a great experience that reaffirmed I wanted to work at a hospital, and at Osler specifically.”
Hospital-wide exposure
One of Aneta’s favourite things about being an MRT is how much her job varies from day to day. “I have the opportunity to examine and support patients all over the hospital. Of course we perform examinations in the DI Department, but we also perform portable examinations in other departments such as emergency, critical care, paediatric intensive care and the post anesthesia care unit. There are even occasions that we’re called to the operating room to assist with fluoroscopic guidance during surgery, forming a multidisciplinary team with the surgeon, operating room nurses and anaesthesiologist. The exposure to so many programs across the hospital is really valuable in developing my skillset, and keeps me engaged and always learning.”
Supporting patients in a time of need
The emotional support that Aneta provides to patients in need is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job. “During the pandemic, I had a concerned first-time father come in with his newborn child for a chest x-ray. As a parent myself, it was a memorable interaction for me because you feel a lot of empathy in those situations. It’s stressful enough coming into the hospital when you’re feeling unwell, but when it’s for your child, that stress is heightened. In that moment, I tried my best to provide comfort and support to this first-time parent while I looked after his child. At the end of the examination he expressed gratitude for my support, which meant a lot to me.”
Careers that go beyond
Etobicoke General Hospital has undergone major redevelopment over the last several years, with the Etobicoke Wellness Centre opening in 2018 followed by a new patient tower in 2019. For Aneta, these facilities are one of the major benefits to working at Osler. “There are so many things that I love about working here. However, I think what I enjoy the most is the work environment. Etobicoke has a beautiful facility. I love working in the brand new buildings with state-of-the-art imaging equipment. I also appreciate how collaborative the DI Department is. It is composed of several different specialties including radiography, CT, ultrasound, MRI, mammography and nuclear medicine. We all work together to ensure that the patient gets the right tests at the right time.”
