Musculoskeletal Program

Osler’s patient-inspired care delivery models are designed to meet the needs of those who live in the Central West LHIN. The Musculoskeletal Program is made up of: the Low Back Pain Rapid Access Clinic, the Rapid Access Clinic for Hip and Knee Joint Osteoarthritis, the Orthopaedic Surgical Screening Program, and the Rheumatology Early Arthritis Clinic. Appointments are by Primary Care Provider or Specialist referrals only and are fully covered by OHIP.

Low Back Pain Rapid Access Clinic (RAC)

The Low Back Pain Rapid Access Clinic is available in several locations throughout the community for people 18 years of age and older who have been experiencing low back pain for at least six weeks but no longer than a year.

Eligible patients can ask their family doctor or nurse practitioner to refer them to the clinic through the Low Back Pain Central Intake.

  • Patients will be assessed by a specially trained advanced practice provider (APP) within four weeks of the referral.
  • The APP will determine how best to proceed with treatment based on the assessment, which may include, patient education to self-manage the condition, a personalized treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs, or referral to other services or programs. Patients who are possible surgical candidates will be referred to Trillium Health Partners (THP) for further assessment and referral to a spine specialist or surgeon.
  • Assessment results and recommendations will be shared with the patient’s family doctor or nurse practitioner.

Patients can ask to be referred to the RAC closest to their home or their RAC of preference.

Low Back Pain RAC appointments are 60 minutes in length, and patients are asked to arrive 30 minutes early for their appointment wearing loose, comfortable clothing. Patients should also bring a valid OHIP card and a list of their current medications.

Central West Rapid Access Clinic (RAC) for Hip and Knee Joint Osteoarthritis

The Rapid Access Clinic (RAC) is an Orthopaedic screening clinic that employs specially trained advanced practice providers (APPs) to complete musculoskeletal assessments for patients who experience moderate to severe hip or knee OA. This clinic aims to reduce the wait time for surgical assessment so patients receive appropriate treatment faster.

  • Referrals for the RAC will be made through the Hip and Knee Central Intake Program.
  • Patients can be referred by their Primary Care Provider to receive an assessment for primary joint replacement or for conservative management advice.
  • Assessment appointments will be booked within two business days
  • Patients will be seen within two to four weeks
  • Results will be provided to referring primary care provider

RACs are located at Brampton Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital, and Headwaters Health Care Centre. Patients will have the choice to be booked into the RAC closest to their home, or their RAC of preference.

RAC appointments are 45 minutes in length, and patients are asked to arrive 15 minutes early for their appointment wearing shorts or loose fitting pants, comfortable clothing and comfortable footwear. Patients should also bring along the CD of their most recent X-rays rays and the list of their medications.
