Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents

Inpatient units

There are two children's mental health inpatient units at Brampton Civic:

Child and Adolescent Unit

This ten-bed unit provides care to children and adolescents up to the age of 18 who are experiencing acute mental health symptoms. They are assessed, treated and discharged with family, school and community supports. An on-site school program may also be arranged as part of the treatment plan.

Child and Adolescent Intensive Unit

This four-bed unit serves acutely ill children and adolescents who arrive through the Emergency Department.

Day hospital

The day hospital program treats children and adolescents up to the age of 18 who:

• are experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms
• do not require more intensive services, such as overnight admission to hospital

Depending on the patient's needs, an on-site school program may also be arranged as part of the treatment plan.

Referrals

Patients can be referred to this program through the Child and Adolescent Inpatient Unit or by a child psychiatrist.

Child psychiatry consultation

We offer consultation, assessment and diagnosis by a child and adolescent psychiatrist for children and youth up to the age of 17.

Referrals

Your family physician or pediatrician can refer you to this program.

Child and adolescent clinic

At this clinic, a team of professionals provides outpatient treatment for children and youth under 18 who have, or are at risk of developing, a psychiatric disorder.

Eating disorders clinic

Our eating disorders clinic treats adults, children, adolescents and youth with mild to moderate eating disorders. We are dedicated to helping you:

• eliminate or reduce symptoms of eating disorders
• develop coping strategies to manage the anxiety of this change

We work collaboratively with physicians and mental health professionals to help you achieve these goals.

Please note: as eating disorders are associated with serious medical complications, patients who participate in our program must be assessed as medically stable by their family doctor.

Services include:

• assessment and diagnosis
• family-based treatment for children and adolescents
• nutritional consultation
• psychoeducation and psychotherapy group intervention
• medical monitoring, in collaboration with your family physician
• psychiatric consultation services

Clinic services are provided by a team that includes the following professionals:

• nurse practitioner
• psychologist
• dietitian
• social worker
