Your Hospital Bill

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers most essential health care services. Some health insurance plans will cover what OHIP does not. Read your insurance plan carefully to make sure you understand your coverage before you come to the hospital. Osler is not able to verify your private insurance coverage.

See our rates for procedures and services not covered by OHIP.

If your procedure, visit or medical device is not covered by OHIP, you will be charged in advance or at the time of your visit. Patients are responsible for any charges they incur during their stay. Examples include:

  • Upgrades to semi-private or private rooms (some insurance plans will pay for these, check with your provider)
  • Medical devices including crutches and casts
  • Medical supplies including tensor bandages and splints
  • Digital copies of diagnostic or ultrasound images for personal use

Fees apply to all patients including Canadian residents, Ontario residents with a valid OHIP card, uninsured residents and international visitors. For the Osler fee guide click here or contact the Finance Department at 905-863-2550 or toll-free at 1-844-456-3538.

Delisted procedures fees

Some procedures are specifically identified as uninsured under the Ontario Health Insurance Act. These procedures are solely for the purpose of altering or restoring appearance, or other services not related to treatment of life threatening conditions. For the Osler fee guide click here or contact the Finance Department at 905-863-2550 or toll-free at 1-844-456-3538. These fees do not include additional fees that the physician will charge.

See our rates for procedures and services not covered by OHIP.

Ambulance and patient transport fees

Ontario residents with valid OHIP coverage will be billed $45 for ambulance transportation. If ambulance transportation is found to be medically unnecessary or the patient does not have a valid health card, he/she will be billed $240.

Before discharge from the hospital, please arrange for your transportation home. We recommend that you plan a ride home with family or friends. Otherwise, the hospital can help arrange transportation for a fee.
