Volunteer at Peel Memorial

Before you apply, make sure that you understand the requirements of volunteering:

  • The minimum age to volunteer is 15 (at the time of application).
  • There is a 60-hour minimum requirement for all volunteers, which takes approximately 6-8 months to complete.
  • A typical volunteer placement is two to four hours, once per week (example every Tuesday 8am to 12noon).
  • Due to the customer service nature of volunteering, volunteers must have excellent communication skills, including verbal and written English. Additional languages are an asset.
  • There are some areas of the hospital that do not offer volunteer opportunities, such as the pharmacy, laboratory, food services, security, housekeeping and medical office.
  • Job shadowing, observer ships or mentoring does not come under the scope of volunteering and is therefore not offered.
  • The Adult and University/College, and High School applications are available all year.
  • For those who are interested in volunteering in the summer only there is a Summer Program for University/College and High School students.
    • UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE STUDENTS: Students must be available to volunteer from May 1st  to August 31st, for 2 fixed shifts daytime/weekdays only.  Deadline for applications March 15th each year.
    • HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: Students must be available to volunteer from July 1st to August 31st, for 2 fixed shifts daytime/weekdays only.  Deadline for applications April 15th each year.
    • Regretfully, we will not be able to guarantee a placement for everyone and we will only be able to contact successful candidates.
    • The University Summer Volunteer Application will open Jan. 28, 2018 and close by end of day March 15, 2018.
    • The High School Summer Volunteer Application will open Feb. 28, 2018 and close by end of day April 15, 2018.

Here is a list of some volunteer opportunities which are categorized under Patient Care, Support Services and Fundraising. These are subject to change depending on program needs, current vacancies and applicant’s skills and availability. Additional program options can be discussed once accepted into the volunteer program.

Attention High School Students:
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with William Osler Health System. Given the large volumes of applications received to date, the year-round high school application process is now closed and will reopen at a later date.

If successful after an in-person interview, you will be asked to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC). For York and Peel residents, you will be provided with a letter to bring to the designated police station. For Toronto residents, please complete the application in-person at one of Osler’s Volunteer Office. Applicants are responsible for the applicable fees.
