Hat's off to Osler nurses during National Nursing Week

Nurses play an important role every day at Osler and National Nurses Week is a timely reminder to say thanks to our nurses for their extraordinary commitment and dedication to patient care.

During the week of May 6 to 12 health care organizations recognize the enormous impact nurses have on the care they provide. Osler is no exception.

Recently, three William Osler nurses who have been nominated for the 17th Annual Toronto Star Nightingale Award.

Nominations are received from patients, family members of patients, colleagues and students.

Etobicoke General's Kelly Meijs and Theresa Nitti and Brampton Civic's Gilda Theriault are among the 111 selected across the province.

In 1971, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) designated the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale on May 12 as International Nurses Day.

The Canadian Nurses Association followed suit to have the week containing May 12 proclaimed as National Nurses Week in 1986.

The federal minister of health proclaimed the second week of May as National Nurses Week. The name was changed to National Nursing Week in 1993.

Ontarians can participate by thanking nurses via social media by using or searching the hashtag #YesThisIsNursing.
