Osler Announces New President and CEO

Dr. Brendan Carr, President and CEO of Vancouver Island Health Authority, has been tapped to lead one of Canada’s largest community hospitals

On June 14, Vanita Varma, Chair of the William Osler Health System (Osler) Board of Directors announced that Dr. Brendan Carr has been named as President and Chief Executive Officer. The announcement comes as a result of an extensive, national search spanning the last ten months.

An emergency department and family physician, Dr. Carr is currently President and CEO of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), based in British Columbia – a position he has held since 2013. An accomplished leader, he has spent his entire career in health care and has held roles in hospitals and health care organizations in the East and West Coasts.

“We’re thrilled that Dr. Carr will be joining Osler, and will be bringing valuable skills, experiences, and insights from his time leading large, integrated regional authorities,” said Vanita Varma, Chair, Osler Board of Directors. “Like Osler, Dr. Carr places tremendous value on partnership and has a keen interest in building and enhancing connections between important health care resources in the community and services in hospital for a better patient experience, more seamless transitions, and greater value for the organization. We look forward to welcoming him to Ontario, and to the community.”

Dr. Carr has a medical degree (1998) from Dalhousie University and completed his medical residency at the University of Ottawa in emergency medicine and family medicine.  He has an MBA (1985) and an undergraduate degree (1983) from Dalhousie University. Dr. Carr is also a Certified Physician Executive (CCPE), a Certified Healthcare Executive (CHE) and completed a research fellowship with the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation.

“I’m looking forward to joining such a dynamic, forward-thinking organization that is leading innovation and partnerships in this province and beyond,” said Dr. Carr. “With the strength of Osler’s seasoned leadership team, I’m excited about the opportunities to reach new heights of innovation in quality delivery of care and in bold partnerships, building on the organization’s many successes and achievements to date. I consider it a privilege to be taking on this role, and to have the opportunity to work with Osler’s dedicated staff, physicians and volunteers, as well as the patients and families in the community.”

Joanne Flewwelling, Interim President and CEO, will continue to lead the organization until Dr. Carr joins Osler in mid-August.

“We were so fortunate to have had a strong, competent leader like Joanne step up and take on the important role of interim President and CEO while the Board conducted its search,” continued Varma. “We sincerely thank Joanne for the incredible job she has done to lead the organization over the last number of months.”
